Artist Story

William’s life was deeply rooted in the arts. He grew up in a creative family (his mother was a doll artist and his sister a fine artist) surrounding him with strong artistic influences from an early age.

After moving to Yellowknife in 1990, he continued to refine his skills and expand the range of his artistic work. He particularly enjoyed watercolours, portraits, and political cartoons. In addition to visual art, he also expressed himself musically, playing the flute, Irish whistle, harmonica, and guitar. He had a strong appreciation for architecture and often captured the unique lines and structures of buildings in his work. One of his proudest accomplishments was a watercolour painting of the Legislative Building before its completion, a copy of which was presented to the Queen.

William held a degree in architecture from Edinburgh, Scotland, and shared his knowledge generously through teaching. He taught for six years at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, offering instruction in book illustration, watercolours, portraits, cartooning, outdoor sketching, and the business of art. He also taught for eight years with the Parks and Recreation Department in the City of Winnipeg, where he demonstrated watercolour painting and cartooning at public events. Over the years, he taught in many Winnipeg schools, led specialized art courses for children, and was invited to teach for art clubs both locally and beyond.

After settling in Yellowknife, he continued his teaching, offering a wide range of courses over the years, including art, writing, and solar building design. He also tutored young people in art, math, and English, helping to support and inspire the next generation.

His involvement in community organizations played an important role in shaping his work. He contributed his time to the John Howard Society and the Citizens Advisory Committees to the Correctional Service, drawing inspiration from these experiences. He believed strongly in the connection between art and community and recognized the many opportunities for artists in the North to engage with others through commissioned work or participation in local galleries.

William’s work and legacy continue to reflect his creativity, generosity as a teacher, and dedication to both his art and his community.
