The Hide and Fur Program provides NWT artisans the support they need to get access to raw materials at affordable prices.
The Hide and Fur Program was first established in 2009 to offset the ban imposed on sealskin imports by the European Union in the interest of protecting the Northwest Territories’ (NWT) traditional economy.
In the interest of sustaining the traditional arts sector, NWT artists identified the need for access to raw materials at affordable prices so they can achieve profitable returns on traditional arts sold in the marketplace.
Artisans can purchase hide and furs from the Traditional Economy Division of the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment or at local distributors across the territory.
