Artist Bio
Tori is Swampy Cree from Opaskwayak Cree Nation, MB and currently resides in Tuktoyaktuk, NT.
Tori’s beadwork is a means of self-discovery and cultural connection. As a self-taught beader, Tori has found solace and kinship in the intricate art of beadwork, a craft that not only became a mode of artistic expression but also a gateway to exploring and honouring her Cree heritage. Born and raised with limited exposure to her cultural roots, Tori’s journey into beadwork was a profound exploration of identity and belonging. Specializing in beaded fringe earrings, Tori infuses each piece with personal significance, weaving together threads of tradition and individuality to create wearable works of art.
During her time in the Beaufort Delta, Tori has had the privilege of learning traditional sewing skills from talented Inuvialuit artists. From sewing sealskin mitts to crafting ookpiks and traditional Inuvialuit dolls, Tori has had the opportunity to learn from the best.
Beyond the realm of traditional art, Tori finds inspiration in the natural world, capturing the breathtaking landscapes of the Arctic and its animals through the lens of her camera. As a photographer specializing in landscape and outdoor/nature photography, Tori seeks to evoke a sense of wonder for the beauty that surrounds us.
Tori endeavours to bridge cultural divides, foster dialogue, and promote healing through her artwork. Her artisan journey exemplifies the transformative power of art in both personal and collective journeys of rediscovery and connection.
