Artist Story

I am most comfortable creating parka covers and earrings. I also love to make slippers and other traditional items for my family. Because of the amount of work that goes into making those, I prefer to keep them for the people that are closest to me. My kids dance, and so does my husband, so it makes me really happy to be able to create something special for them to wear in those moments!

I create earrings using gun shells that my husband uses during Spring geese harvest. I like to put them on moose hide with granny hanky and beads. My favourite material to work with is moose hide because of the smell.

My Jijuu gifted me a beading set when I was really young. I kept it for many years, but I did 't use it. I was so young and I didn't know anything about beading at the time. When I finally decided to try beading, I really enjoyed it. I slowly started to work on a few projects for myself. I then started making items for my children or my husband and just kept creating from there. A friend introduced me to creating and selling earrings around 2019 using the brickstitch method. Afterwards, I started beading and incorporating other materials into earrings. My mom has been helping me a lot along the way with parka covers and my Amaa has also been a source of inspiration for me.

My creative process isn't linear. To some, my worktable would just look bizarre! Everything is all out in the open because I like to see all my materials at once. It allows me to just start a project and grab things as I go. I like the whole process. I love that I can think about an idea and that I get to make it come to life. I love to see things through, from the start to the finish. The feeling of  completion at the end is something I always look forward to. Thankful to create art and share with those around me.

If you looked at my first stitches compared to what I do now, you would see such a big difference. I have evolved a lot in my work since I first started. I look at the first slippers I made for my husband and the pair that I just made for my daughter and I can see that my work is much neater. My patience has also increased with time. I know the process is slower and I try to embrace that [pace now.

Artist Bio

Karlyn resides in Aklavik with her family. As a mom of four little ones, making art is a calm place for her to go to when life gets busy. Along with her cultural roots — and the women who learned to bead and sew before her — Karlyn is inspired by her surroundings, whether it’s a particular piece of clothes, natural landscapes, or fall-time colours. She started selling her artwork in 2019, and primarily sells on social media through her Facebook page Designs by KarJoy.
