Artist Bio

Ashley Kay is a self-taught Tetlit Gwich'in artist from Fort McPherson, Northwest Territories. Her beading journey began in 2021 when she taught her first stitches from her sister, sparking a passion that quickly grew into a form of artistic expression and cultural reconnection. As she practiced, Ashley discovered a natural ability to design her own patterns—transforming inspiration into striking earrings, brooches, and beaded bag patches that showcase her creativity and deep connection to her roots.

Beading became more than a craft for Ashley; it offered patience, grounding, and a sense of healing. With each piece, she feels the presence of her ancestors and the strength of her culture. Her elegant eye for colour is a signature element of her work—she chooses hues that stand out, pop, and carry meaning, creating pieces that feel both contemporary and timeless.

Ashley takes pride in creating wearable art that allows others to carry a piece of her heritage with them. Through her work, she honours her community, her family, and the traditions that continue to inspire her.

She shares her latest creations on social media under “Bead and Arrow Creations,” a collaborative platform she runs with her sister —celebrating their shared love of beading and the stories woven into every stitch.
