Artist Story

I do traditional sewing of all kinds. My mom taught me how to sew when I was 8 or 9 years old. I tried but it was too hard for me sometimes. She said it isn’t hard after a while. So I started by sewing baby moccasins and then did bigger and bigger ones. If it was wrong I had to redo it and oh, sometimes I was just crying about that! Now, anything people want, they ask me for it and I just make it.

Sewing makes me feel good. I like to work with moose hides that I have tanned on my own because they are better and easier to work with. My mom was always working on hides so I watched and helped her and finally I was able to tan them myself. I like to sew also on stroud too because my hands are getting old and it is easier to sew on.

I teach kids to sew in Dettah. It is good. Kids are such fast learners! Right away those girls knew how to make the slippers. They listen well and it is important for them. You can take care of yourself if you know how to sew.
