The first thing I made 25 years ago was a beaded belt. I used to enjoy beading more than anything else, but recently I’ve become more comfortable with embroidery, and am doing a lot of that. My sister was my mentor. People admire her sewing. I learned from her that I could show my work to others. She gave me a lot of encouragement.
It’s a good feeling when people admire your sewing, and it’s an excellent pastime for me. I know I’ll never be bored, because I’ll always have sewing. Once I pick up my work, it’s very hard for me to put it down until it’s finished. No matter how many pieces I’ve done before, I’m always excited to see how the next one will turn out.
I like to challenge myself with new techniques. I’m self-taught, so it’s exciting to learn new things. And people are always asking me to make things for them, which is a great feeling. I think that one day I’d like to make a pair of slippers for myself, though. Out of all the sewing I’ve done, I’ve never made a pair for myself!
