Artist Bio
As a longtime northerner of over 40 years, I have always been inspired by the beauty, vastness, and spirit of the Northwest Territories. I’ve admired the many northern artists who capture our landscapes, our incredible light, and the bold colours of the Aurora. Their work has always reminded me of just how special this place is.
My journey into painting began later in life. My mother was an artist and always encouraged me to paint, but for many years I was held back by self-doubt and the fear that I simply wouldn’t be good enough. After my mother passed away from Alzheimer’s disease on November 11, 2022, I found myself searching for a way to work through my grief and reconnect with something that had always been waiting for me.
In December 2022, I finally picked up a brush and began painting. What started as a way to cope with loss quickly became something much more meaningful. Painting has given me an outlet for my emotions, a place to escape, and most importantly, a way to feel connected to my mother.
I am a self-taught artist, learning primarily through experimentation, practice, and countless hours of watching and learning from other artists. I work with both acrylics and oils and some watercolour and haven't settled on a particular style or subject—and I’m perfectly happy with that. I love exploring, trying new techniques, and seeing where each painting takes me.
For me, art isn't about being perfect. It’s about curiosity, connection, healing, and having the courage to finally begin.
