Artist Story

Martin Goodliffe was a Northern Canadian jeweller and artist based in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. He first came North in 1978, initially traveling to Dawson with plans to work in a gold mine. When that opportunity fell through, he moved to Inuvik, beginning a lifelong connection with the North. Over the years, his experiences traveling on the land, by snowmobile and boat, became a strong source of inspiration for his art. He was also grateful to have been surrounded and encouraged by many talented Northern artists and mentors.

Martin found purpose and fulfillment in creating. As a child, he found school challenging, but later recognized that art was where he truly excelled. He embraced experimentation and growth, developing his skills over time to create jewellery, carvings, and sculptures. Each piece he made was unique, often free-drawn and inspired directly by the materials he worked with.

He later dedicated himself fully to jewellery making and enrolled in the Arctic College Jewellery and Metalworking program, graduating with honours. This experience helped shape his distinctive style, combining metals and organic materials such as mammoth ivory, muskox horn, and caribou antler. Nature remained central to his work, guiding both his designs and creative process.

Martin was an active member of the Northern arts community. He participated in exhibitions and festivals, including the Great Northern Arts Festival, where he received multiple People’s Choice and Best of Show awards. He was also known for teaching, mentoring, and demonstrating his craft, sharing his knowledge with others.

His work reflected his creativity, curiosity, and deep connection to the North. Martin’s legacy continues through his art and the many people he inspired along the way.
