Artist Story
Lisa always thought that the most unique art came out of the Northwest Territories and felt grateful to be a part of that. She absolutely loved all forms of cultural and traditional arts. Knowing and working with other northern artists greatly expanded and influenced her own art.
Lisa was raised in Edmonton, but her mother decided to bring the family back to the Delta Region, where their family was originally from. When she first returned, she was skeptical; being raised in the city was all she knew and what she was used to. But after a few years of living there, she began to appreciate its qualities. She came to love the outdoors, as well as the isolation and beauty of nature that the North offers. The North has many varying qualities, cultures and traditions, and Lisa worked to incorporate those influences into her paintings.
Lisa had always enjoyed making art while growing up, although she took a long break during her teenage years. Later in life, she returned to painting and was happy to make time for it as she settled down. She worked on projects that blended modern slogans with traditional northern cultures. Her ideas seemed endless, and what began as painting a little at a time grew into a constant stream of new ideas and paintings.
Artist Bio
A Gwich'in born and raised in the south, Lisa only returned to the Beaufort Delta as a teenager. As a natural talent, Lisa enjoyed fiddling with drawing throughout Art class in High school. "I left art alone for quite a few years because at that point in my life I was not passionate about it." Many moons later, Lisa picked up where she left off and decided to try an acrylic piece and it just felt right. Lisa now currently resides in Fort Smith (South Slave) and since approximately 2013, Lisa paints using acrylics on canvas in her spare time between balancing work and family. "My goal is to inspire people through use of positive modern slogans placing a traditional twist through imagery". So far, Lisa has been given positive feedback and will continue to paint and see where this art form takes her. She has many fantastic ideas and cannot get them on canvas fast enough! "It is super exciting and I feel good doing it and that is what is most important. My form of self-care." Lisa anticipates what the future holds in the form of her art and will keep on keepin' on.
