Artist Bio

Jane had done a great deal to improve the lives of women and younger generations in Fort Simpson and throughout the Deh Cho region. She worked to keep her culture alive by teaching the Dene Zhati (Slavey) language and demonstrating traditional sewing. She also supported cultural school events, which later became known as cultural camps.

Jane had patience with new learners and taught young women to continue making traditional items such as mukluks and mitts. She was a positive role model and a well-respected Elder, often described as a true Dene woman. She was a storyteller who shared her experiences of being raised in traditional ways. Jane was always willing to share, teach, and keep traditional knowledge alive in any way she could.
