The NWT Arts Strategy 2021-31 will guide GNWT priorities for growth in the creative sector over the next decade. The four main goals are: improve GNWT arts programs and services; strengthen education, engagement and leadership in the arts; support arts infrastructure; and strengthen the NWT creative sector.

What We Heard: Summary of Public Engagement NWT Arts Strategy 2020-2030 (1.23 MB)

Between November 2018 and August 2019, the Departments of Education, Culture and Employment (ECE) and Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI) worked together to conduct a joint public engagement initiative to gather input from northerners about their vision and ideas for arts priorities in the Northwest Territories (NWT). Over 500 individuals from communities throughout the NWT provided feedback through in-person interviews, focus groups, facilitated meetings and online surveys.
This What We Heard report is a summary of the main themes and key messages which emerged during public engagements. This public input will assist the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) to shape the NWT Arts Strategy 2020-2030 (the ‘Strategy’). The Strategy will provide guidance to the GNWT in driving policy and in setting priorities to support, promote and enhance the arts sector.

Entre novembre 2018 et août 2019, le ministère de l’Éducation, de la Culture et de la Formation (MÉCF) et le ministère de l’Industrie, du Tourisme et de l’Investissement (MITI) ont travaillé de concert pour mener un échange avec le public et recueillir les suggestions et les idées des Ténois sur les priorités dans le domaine des arts aux Territoires du Nord-Ouest (TNO). Plus de 500 personnes dans les collectivités des TNO ont fait part de leurs suggestions au cours d’entrevues en personne, de groupes de discussion, de rencontres dirigées et de sondages en ligne.
Le présent rapport résume les principaux thèmes et messages clés qui sont ressortis des séances. Les commentaires recueillis aideront le gouvernement des Territoires du Nord-Ouest (GTNO) à élaborer la Stratégie 2020 à 2030 pour les arts aux TNO. La Stratégie orientera le GTNO pour élaborer les politiques et établir les priorités dans le soutien, la promotion et la croissance du secteur des arts.

The Northwest Territories Arts Strategy, "A Holistic Approach to a Vibrant Arts Sector," was released on November 1, 2004 by Education, Culture and Employment (ECE) Minister Charles Dent and Resources, Wildlife and Economic Development (RWED) Minister Brendan Bell.
The Strategy addresses the effectiveness of current programs supporting the arts and identifies an action plan to provide for emerging needs. This Strategy will move us towards achieving our vision,
“To secure the stability of a vibrant Arts sector that is integral to the economic, social, and cultural fabric of the NWT, and contributes positively to the quality of life within the NWT.”
This strategy represents the Government of the Northwest Territories' recognition of the important role that arts and fine crafts plays in both our society and our economy, and demonstrates our commitment to take action to address identified issues and opportunities in this sector.
