Yellowknife artist opens solo show and gallery on the same weekend, different locations
Yellowknife painter Jessica A. McVicker is fulfilling a lifelong dream.
The 34-year old artist is opening her own gallery in historic Old Town at 3806 Bretzlaff Road (behind Gallery of the Midnight Sun). The gallery opens on Saturday, June 18.
The quaintly named JAMmed Studio is a play on the artist’s initials (Jessica Alice McVicker). The namesake is also a nod to her colourful, scenic acrylic paintings lovingly “jammed” into her log cabin studio.
Just down the street, Jessica’s solo show Born and Raised opens at ARCC’s studio space at 3541 McDonald Drive on June 16 @ 7 pm. Jessica has called Yellowknife home for close to a decade but her roots are in the Kootenays: a scenic region of southern BC known for its rivers, mountains and lakes. Born and Raised pays tribute to BC roots which have fueled her love of northern Canadian landscapes.
Jessica has a BFA in illustration from ACAD (Alberta College of Art and Design). Her collaborative painting with Jillian Mazur graces the cover of Northwestel’s 2016-17 phonebook. Jessica’s work has been featured across the NWT, most notably at NACC, the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre, the Great and Northern Arts Festival.
