Yellowknife Artist Run Community Center: 'This City III' with artist Steve deBruyn
'This City III' with artist in residence Steve deBruyn
The YK ARCC is pleased to announce Steve deBruyn as the artist in residence for ‘This City III’. During his time in Yellowknife, the London Ontario based artist will focus on Yellowknife’s unoccupied spaces, re-purposing found materials, and engaging with the local community to create site-specific installations.
Steve deBruyn graduated from NSCAD in 2002 and has had exhibited widely across Canada in solo and group exhibitions. Recent exhibitions include: BANG Centre d'Art Actuel in Chicoutimi; Harcourt House in Edmonton; Struts Gallery in Sackville, and Open Sky, in Ft. Simpson.
He creates immersive realms through community-engaged art this is vibrant and colourful. Working with aesthetics as a subject deBruyn’s artwork takes shape organically through a hands-on process that allows those he engages with to directly participate in its creation. He retains creative control while allowing others to directly influence him as he works, bringing participants through his process and investing them in the finished product. Each installation is unique - being constructed from materials gathered in the host community. In this way, deBruyn transforms each community itself into an aesthetic.
Throughout his residency, deBruyn will give an artist talk; host two graffiti spray/paint workshops; and execute both an indoor and outdoor site-specific installation.
