Open Sky Creative Society (OSCS) / OSC Gallery
An Artist Run Centre Located in Fort Simpson, NWT
Beginning in June 2008 the Open Sky Creative Society (OSCS) in Fort Simpson will begin operating the first & only artist-run, year round professional public exhibition venue for contemporary art in the NWT (OSC Gallery).
The gallery & resource centre will be housed in the basement of the Village of Fort Simpson Administration Building until April 2009 when itwill be relocated to the newly renovated/opened Fort Simpson Heritage Centre.
Four exhibitions are planned for 2008, the first of which will take place from June 25th-August 8th; titled: Craftwork-Craftsmanship. This inaugural exhibition will take place in conjunction with the Open Sky Festival 2008 & National Aboriginal Arts Administrators & Funders Gathering 2008 & will feature four national guest artists (Anna Torma, Alan Lacovetsky, Diane Gonthier, & Lyn Fabio) as well as three artists from the Dehcho (names TBA).
This inaugural exhibition will also include a special week long solo exhibition component by installation artist France Trepaner, who will be exhibiting her work VESSELS in the theatre room at the Village of Fort Simpson, Visitor Information Centre from June 25th-July 2nd.
Other exhibitions planned for 2008 include two regular exhibits (artists chosen from a national call for submissions) as well as a Dehcho artist-members exhibit (Mid November-December).
Artist-Run Centre Funding News
In April 2008 the Open Sky Creative Society learned that their application to the Assistance to Artist Run Centres Program, a program under the Visual Arts Section of the Canada Council for the Arts was successful.
The society has receive confirmation for exhibition programming funding for two years (2008-2009 / 2009-2010), which will be supplemented by further fundraising.
