Ottawa, October 13, 2009 – Over $158 million was awarded to more
than 4,400 artists and arts organizations in all regions of the
country last year, the Canada Council for the Arts announced today
in its 2008-09 Annual Report.

Over $144 million was awarded in the form of grants, as well as $3.5 million in prizes and fellowships and $9.9 million in payments to writers, translators and illustrators under the Public Lending Right program, which compensates authors for the availability of their books in Canadian public libraries.

Vancouver, BC — Forty budding teenage journalists or videographers from across Canada will have the opportunity to cover history in the making at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games through a new program called Historica-Dominion at the Games.

In just a few months, Canada will welcome the world’s finest athletes
as part of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games. As a
precursor to the Games, the Olympic Torch Relay will make its way
across Canada, travelling from coast-to-coast-to-coast joining
together all Canadians in celebration.

The Writers' Studio is quickly approaching our 10th year
anniversary, so we have developed a great competition to celebrate!
We are asking for never-before published authors to submit their
manuscripts in fiction, poetry and/or creative non-fiction, for a
national manuscript competition -- The Writer's Studio First Book
Awards in 2010. The winning manuscripts in each genre will be
published by Anvil Press in 2011.
