Artist Story

I am a traditional artist and love making crafts such as beading, sewing or anything else that has to do with my Gwich’in culture in Fort McPherson.

I learned how to sew through my mom, my grandmother, other Elders in my community, my friends, and on my own by practicing a lot. I was 15 years old when I first started to sew and the first thing I made was a pair of shoes that we call “knitted strips”.

I get my inspiration from within myself or from other people around me. I like to bead detailed flowers, hearts or diamond shapes. Sometimes I make my own patterns, and sometimes my friends draw on my artwork for me and we share the profits. I start with a black outline and fill the colors in. One of my favorite colours to work with is white. I also like to embroider with pinks and blues.

I like to sew because it is part of my culture. I just love it; it makes me feel so happy. When I want to make something that I’ve never sewn before, I learn with the help of the Elders in my community. I’m so pleased when the Elders tell me that I did a good job, especially when it’s the first time that I gave it a try!
