Artist Story

I like to draw nature scenes, which is really why I moved to the North in the first place- to work and be surrounded by the outdoors. I was born and raised in Norway House, Manitoba, worked in the Mackenzie Delta area in the early seventies and settled in Hay River in 1975.

I have always had an interest in art and was always doodling around. My dad actually wanted to be a professional artist when he was young but his father said he’d starve to death. Still, throughout his life he created beautiful Northern art. I started out pencil sketching, than I did some woodcarving and woodcut prints before I settled on glasswork. I consider myself more of an artisan than an artist.

Today, I design and make custom stained glass windows and also create sandblasted images on sheet stained glass or glasswire. I create abstract designs for my work; mostly Northern scenes like polar bears, ptarmigan, Northern lights or Arctic landscapes.

I love designing and creating stained glass windows that reflect the lifestyle s of my clients. When I get into the mood working with stained glass I am not really thinking or worrying about anything, so it just clears my mind. It’s always fun working with colour and graphic design; starting with just simple little pencil sketches and finishing with these great creations.

Artist Bio:

George Low, a recently retired fisheries biologist, is a longtime resident of Hay River, Northwest Territories. Born and raised in northern Manitoba, the Boreal forest has always been a major influence in his art. George has directed his artistic talents towards working with glass and has found his niche in this medium. His original designs incorporate the flora and fauna and scenery of the taiga and tundra. Adopting the "Tiffany method" which allows for great detail as well as flowing design, he produces windows and other projects in stained glass. Aside from traditional glass work, he etches northern designs on stained glass and glassware. George is presently developing a style in hot glass, using a kiln to meld colour and form with new artistic freedom.
