I've been living in the NWT since 1981. I was born and raised in Toronto. I've spent a lot of time around wood. I've heated homes in Deline and Yellowknife with it. I make birch syrup along the Ingraham Trail. After retiring from a teaching career in 2018, I began turning wood using local birch, pine and tamarack. I harvest the wood in March and let it dry in the bush over summer. I've attended a few workshops down south. The grain of tamarack is very distinctive and makes attractive end grain cutting boards. I've attended local craft shows and set up a booth at the Farmer's Market. Some of my work can be found in local galleries. My work also has been put into silent auctions. It's rewarding to transform a local resource into something beautiful and useful.
