Artist Story
I learned to made traditional arts from my mom Rosie Sewie. I have had other people show me too, but what I like most to use are my mom’s ideas. Before she passed away, she left me a couple caribou hides and a moose hide so I tanned them and I will make something like a jacket. Sewing keeps her spirit alive. Sometimes if I kind of get stuck with something, I think about about how she would make it. From there I start doing it and it comes to me easy. That is when I am just happy.
Sewing is something I do for my kids and others too if they ask. It is calming and settles me down. When I sew, my stitches have to be done perfectly and not show. I always take my time and make sure everything is lined up. If it’s kind of crooked I have to do it again. It has to be perfect, the way it should be. Then I am really proud of it.
