Artist Story

My philosophy towards photography begins with the consideration that the camera and lenses are merely tools for visually expressing what I see in my mind's eye, and the spirit I feel in my heart. Embracing this artistic expression is the synergy of truth, love and beauty.

I started capturing photos at a very young age.  My Father was a gifted photographer and being in the photo-finishing business, I had access to cameras and film throughout my formative years.

Throughout my lifetime passion with photography, in a relationship of joy and love, I have been obsessed with “seeing” and experiencing the spirit and power of the land, and all the beauty of the Universe that surrounds and sustains us, passionate about capturing natural light and the patterns of nature, as a way to stop and capture a moment in time, which is passing and which is true.  For me, every photograph is an eternal, cosmic mirror, freezing a fleeting moment – a real moment – sending an image into the future, forever immortalizing what we “see”.

Artist Bio:

Arthur Boutilier was born in Halifax in 1946, and has lived in Yellowknife since 1981. Having degrees in engineering, architecture and landscape architecture, he has been involved with urban design and community planning, national park planning, and regional land use planning. Arthur became interested in photography at Expo 67' in Montreal when he was 21. As a self-taught artist, with over 38 years of experience, he considers himself a serious landscape photographer. Using natural light primarily, many of Arthur's images exhibit his intuitive use of geometry and sensitive response to the silence of darkness. Part of his current artistic philosophy is to seek out the feedback of friends and other artists in the North, in order to help guide him on his personal photographic and spiritual journeys.
